I did a lot of research before buying this player. I'm not a big fan of Sony, and lean more toward Samsumg. I have a C6800 Samsung and again after a few days. When I got the Sony BDP-S580, the first difference I noticed is user friendly XMB menu bar on this player.
Setting up the choice is easy and there is little that can be tweaked. Built-in Wi-Fi works perfectly. Another good feature is that because it has a flow of content, it will display the current download speeds are neat. Want to control your player from your phone, there is an iPhone application for it.
Load times and image quality is comparable. This is nice sleak Samsumg remote as opposed to the frankly ugly-pretty remote. So all in all it was a solid player and has many small touches that make the best out there.
On a side note, I agree with another reviewer about the limitations of image quality on component video connections. But I would'nt take a star from the player to it because this is a matter of Blu-Ray industry.
Every new player made on or after January 2011 should limit the quality of the connection components. While it is a different discussion of why they should or should'nt do it, bottom line is that it is not a short-coming of this player. If you have component video connections (and many people), you should consider the 2010 players.
